A study in the March/April 2005 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics finds that the more a person loses the normal, forward curve in the neck, the more likely they are to suffer from neck pain and related problems. In the study, researchers examined 277 random records of patients from an Australian chiropractic college clinic. The patients’ x-ray films were measured for the amount of neck curve and how far forward their head was misaligned over the normal balance point. The films were then correlated with their symptomatic complaints at the time they began chiropractic care. After the data from the x-rays and files were collected, they were sorted by age, sex, and the amount of curve and forward head shift that were measured. The researchers found that patients with a straight or reversed curve in the neck were 18 times more likely to experience neck pain and related problems. They also found that the more a patient’s head had shifted forward, the more likely they would experience neck pain and related problems. Patients whose neck curves were within the normal range experienced statistically insignificant amounts of neck pain and were considered clinically normal. The patients’ age or sex played no part in the outcome of the study. Anytime the spine becomes misaligned, wide-ranging functional problems can and do develop. It is my job to restore and maintain proper alignment of your spine thereby helping you maintain the highest level of function possible.
Why Dr. Russell Became a Chiropractor
I want to share with you why I became a chiropractor.
As a student at Penn State, I was studying Premed. I always wanted to be a doctor to help people be more healthy. My Sophomore year, I was preparing for the MCAT’s and something didn’t feel right. I was thinking to myself that I didn’t want to be another doctor just pushing medications and surgery on people. There had to be a better way.
I made an appointment to speak with Dr. Mitchell, the Dean of Premed. He interviewed me for a half hour, asking me questions about what I like, what my goals are and my doubts. At the very end, I remember him saying, “Russell, you should be a chiropractor.” Really? A chiropractor? I said, “But Dr. Mitchell, I want to be a real doctor.”
Like most people, I had no idea what a chiropractor was or did. He then gave me a list of over 20 health related professions: dentistry, podiatry, pharmaceutical research, veterinary medicine, etc. Over the following 2 years, I went through that list. At the beginning of my last semester, the only thing left on the list was CHIROPRACTIC!
I kept looking at that sheet of paper. Then said what do I have to lose and went to the library at Penn State. I started my research into chiropractic. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Wow, chiropractic isn’t about back pain? Chiropractic is about how the body works? Chiropractic is about how the nervous system controls all functions of the body? NOW THIS MAKES SENSE!
I then graduated from Penn State and began meeting with several local chiropractors in New Jersey. What an eye opener and right away I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor. Each doctor I met with went to different schools but they all said if they had to do it over again, each said they would go to the biggest and best school, “Life Chiropractic College.”
Well, if I am going to become a chiropractor, I am going to the best school for it. I then started my venture to become a chiropractor at Life College in Marietta, Georgia. It was at this point I started to get adjusted myself for the health benefits. I didn’t expect to feel a difference but within a couple of visits, I noticed immediate relief of a bronchial condition I suffered with for over 10 years. Medical doctors pushed inhalers to my parents to give to me. Not one ever gave me relief. Now, finally after all these years, an amazing thing called chiropractic allowed me to breath normally again for the last 24 years. I was able to play soccer again during the colder months without gasping for air. On top of that, I wasn’t inhaling those chemical laden inhalers that have several dangerous side effects.
So, I became a chiropractor almost 20 years ago. I wanted to share the amazing benefits of chiropractic. I want you to know what chiropractic really is, like I found out 25 years ago. Almost 13 years ago, I came back to my hometown to give back to the community I grew up and love so much.
Chiropractic is about removing interference from the nervous system, allowing the body to function optimally. Chiropractic has so many health benefits improving functions of every organ, muscle, tissue and cell in the body. Over 20 years, not only have I seen people come in for pain and get relief of their back pain and neck pain, but we’ve also helped many children and adults get relief of their ear infections, acid reflux, hiatal hernias, asthma and allergies, migraines, fibromyalgia, lower blood pressure, reduced stress, improved sleep, improved sports performance and much more.

Best Herniated Disc Treatment: Chiropractic or Injections?
Over 80% of the population suffers with back pain and a big culprit is lumbar disc herniations. People seeking help want the best herniated disc treatment. Many people go to orthopedic doctors and pain management doctors that prescribe risky and costly procedures. A recent study
shows chiropractic’s effectiveness in relation to nerve root injections. The study itself indicated that chiropractic and nerve root injections were equally successful, but looking at the data, one can see the chiropractic patients were more satisfied in their pain assessment and overall improvement. You can read the details of the study: click here
In brief, the study compared self reported pain and “improvement” by 102 patients suffering with confirmed lumbar disc herniations who were treated by either chiropractic adjustments or nerve root injections. Over 76% of the Chiropractic patients reported feeling improvement after treatment, compared to just over 62% of patients receiving the steroid injections. In regards to pain, the chiropractic patients also had better better results with 60% having significant reductions in pain, compared to 53% of injection patients.
The study reports only a slight reduction in costs with chiropractic at $558.75 and the injections at $729.61. If you calculate the savings, it comes to 23% and in a country where health care expenditures are thru the roof this is rather significant. If you extrapolate out the number of injections that are performed over the less risky chiropractic adjustments, the numbers are astronomical. Patients with low back pain don’t have to risk the side effects and highers costs of steroid injections as this is another study that shows chiropractic is the best herniated disc treatment.
Chiropractors, like Dr. Russell Brokstein at Hometown Family Wellness Center in Freehold, NJ are helping patients receive the best herniated disc treatment that is conservative, safe and cost effective. Chiropractic treatment isn’t only covering up the symptoms like steroid injections objective is. Chiropractic is actually correcting the cause of the dysfunction that is causing the pain so you can once again enjoy your normal daily activities. Welcome to the World of Wellness: Healthcare, not Sickcare
Do you have any health problems that concern you? Have you tried one medical doctor after another just prescribing medications that at most just cover up your symptoms but at the same time cause side effects that you end up needing more medications from. Well there is a better way to lead you to actual health so you can finally gain your life back and enjoy your normal activities.
There are 3 causes to poor health:
1) Physical trauma to the spine will cause pressure on nerves therefore interfering with the messages being sent thru your nervous system. Our body’s organs, tissues and cells all function based on these messages going thru the nerves. Throughout our lifetime we experience traumas that accumulate that will put pressure on the nerves therefore affecting the functioning of our body. From the time you’re born, how many times do you fall when you first learn to walk, playing sports, sitting at desks at schools, carrying heavy books, auto accidents/fender benders, carrying a pocket book or brief case, missing a step or curb. I can keep going but think you get the point. If we can find where these traumas are building up, we can remove the pressure to the nervous system so your body will function more optimally.
2) We all experience stress..especially in these days and times. Well most people do things that affect how our bodies deal with stress. The 2 biggest things that decrease our body’s ability to deal with stress are drinking caffeine and eating simple carbs/sugars. By consuming these products it affects our adrenal glands which are also called the stress glands. They produce the hormones of the body: adrenaline, cortisol, norepephrine and DHEA. When these hormones aren’t at proper levels, it will lead to: heart conditions, digestive problems, sleep problems, fatigue, allergies, diabetes, weight issues, arthritic conditions, immune problems, PMS, monopause symptoms, libido problems…the list goes on and on and I’m sure you will realize these are many of the health issues you and most people you know experience. Well covering up these symptoms with medications isn’t the solution. With a simple one minute non invasive test, we can find this problem and correct it with simple dietary and supplentary suggestions.
3) The final problems is toxicity. Everything we eat, breath and drink has chemicals in them. These chemicals build up in our body cause our body to be more toxic and more acidic. Our body is a filter system yet we neglect it. Think of your car, air conditioner, refrigerator and other appliances. We know if we dont change the filters the efficiency of those machines decreases. Well we have to clean out our filter systems and it can be done naturally. First we can do a 5 second test to see how toxic the body is.
By taking a more naturalistic approach to our health, we can correct these 3 health issues and you will be more healthy naturally. Isn’t it time to take a different approach to health and wellness?

What Can You Change in Your Life to Decrease Your Stress?
The big question is how to arm yourself against the stress that occurs in life, because one thing that every one of us can count on is stress.
The reason why doctors like myself are so concerned about your stress level and the skills you have to decrease your stress is because stress makes the body kick out hormones such as cortisol that destroys your ability to rejuvenate your body.
High levels of stress hormones make it easy for you to put on weight around your waist, decrease your lifespan, and accelerate the progression of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and dementia.
So now, let’s look at ways you can relax. Check off the methods below you use to relax. At the end of the list, there are blank lines for you to write in any other methods you use to relax.
___ Fishing ___ Schedule and take a long vacation
___ Listening to music ___ Playing a musical instrument
___ Reading ___ Watching sports games or attending sporting events
___ Singing ___ Watching entertaining movies
___ Driving ___ Attending concerts, plays or going to art museums
___ Praying ___ Spending time outside in the fresh air
___ Socializing ___ Laughing, cheering up friends, comedy shows
___ Hiking ___ Spending time with pets
___ Exercising

Commit to it and stick to your word. You will feel better – I guarantee it!
Now earlier I discussed stress hormones. We have glands in our body called the adrenal glands, nicknamed the “stress glands” because they regulate 4 of the main hormones of the body that regulate stress to the body. These hormones are adrenaline, norepenephrine, cortisol and DHEA. When these hormones are in balance your body will deal with stress more easily and be healthy naturally.
Unfortunately, most people consume 2 products that destroy these glands and the balance of these hormones. Too many people consume coffee and other caffeine products. The caffeine dehydrates the tissues of the body and “kills” the adrenal glands. The other products are refined carbohydrates such as sugar, white bread, white rice, white pasta, etc.
When your adrenaline levels are off for too long, it leads to heart conditions. Imbalance norepenephrine levels leads to digestive issues like IBS, acid reflux and colitis. Cortisol imbalance leads to allergies, weight problems, diabetes, immune problems, joint problems, fatigue and sleep issues..just to name a few. The final hormone affected is DHEA which helps control the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels and when off balance leads to libido issues, PMS, Menopause, fertility problems and more. So I guess you can see all the health issues that can be created by stress if the adrenal glands aren’t working optimally.
I get from many patients that they only drink one cup of coffee a day… hmmm, well is it a grande? Seriously though, one cup a day over many days, months and years will destroy your adrenal glands. It is the accumulative affects of the caffeine. Just like if you told me you only smoked one or two cigarettes in a day.. you know over time that would destroy your lungs and lead to higher incidence of cancer.
In our office as part of your initial consultation, I evaluate your adrenal glands to make sure your body is regulating the hormones and stress levels properly so you will be healthy naturally.
Finally, it is scientifically proven that internal and external stressors lead to many health issues from heart conditions, digestive issues, headaches, fibromyalgia, skin conditions, anxiety, depression, many dependencies like smoking and eating and so much more. We are one of only 5 offices in NJ that has technology to analyze your body for over 50,000 stressors or sensitivities that can be causing many of your health symptoms. Through bio-energetic stress reduction therapy, we are able to see how severely acute or chronic your sensitivities are. We print you out a report then using the therapy, we positively recondition your body to reduce the stress.
So, are you ready to lead a more healthy lifestyle without drugs or surgery? Are you ready to enjoy your family and normal daily activities once again? Taking care of these areas discussed is important to live a healthy long life.
