My name is Dr. Russell Brokstein and as a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I have helped many Fibromyalgia sufferers over the years. The first question I am always asked is: “Will I have Fibromyalgia for the rest of my life?
You’ll be glad to know that fibromyalgia is seen as a temporary condition, although some people may have had its symptoms for several years. Many people have overcome fibromyalgia and you can, too. Others have been able to reverse the symptoms and remain careful about what they do, preventing the symptoms from returning.
The second question I usually get is: “What is the cause of Fibromyalgia?”
Fibromyalgia is a disease that has multiple causes. Completed research studies on fibromyalgia patients have brought about several theories.
The first is that there has been an injury to the neck or upper spine, which triggers fibromyalgia by affecting the central nervous system. Another is that psychological stress is the cause. It’s even possible that disturbed sleep patterns for long periods of time can trigger the disorder. If your true cause is any of these, we can start making a difference in small increments right now, today!
Physicians don’t have a method of determining what is YOUR true cause of fibromyalgia, so we’re waiting for technology to come up with some valid tests. In the meantime, we already have solutions for injury to the neck or upper spine: chiropractic and healing the body from within. We already have solutions for reducing psychological stress. And we already have solutions for disturbed sleep patterns. Some of these solutions are in this blog series. All you have to do is embrace them! Get going on using them and your body will get going with the healing!
Some patients wonder why they have Fibromyalgia if they don’t fit into the above categories of having a neck injury, psychological stress or disturbed sleep patterns.
It’s possible that you may have had an injury that you don’t recall because you were too young. It’s possible that there are other causes for the disorder as well.
Some researchers blame bacteria or viruses for triggering fibromyalgia while others state that metabolic or hormonal changes, especially in thyroid hormone are the cause.
Others believe that changes or abnormalities in the sympathetic nervous system, the part of the nervous system that helps us deal with extreme stress and survival situations are behind the real cause of fibromyalgia. No one really knows for sure.
There are some studies that show that fibromyalgia sufferers are more sensitive to pain signals in the brain. This causes higher levels of neutrotransmitters that are created in the brain. With higher levels of neurotransmitters, the least little trigger to the pain receptors such as a touch of the forearm can cause pain.
Is All This Worth My Time and Effort?
So the big question is then: If Fibromyalgia has so many causes and a patient doesn’t know what caused their case, will the diet, exercise and sleep recommendations work for you?
The answer is a resounding YES! By receiving chiropractic treatments, you will be addressing the causes that have to do with the nervous system. This directly and indirectly affects the metabolic pathways and the hormonal pathways. Chiropractic manipulations create harmony inside the body through the physiology and that harmony decreases stress and helps you sleep better. The diet recommendations will help your nervous system function better, decrease stress, provide the nutrients your body needs for every cell to work properly and assist the body in healing. Certain vitamins, nutrients and herbs can promote healing and also decrease infections. When you provide everything the body needs, that’s when the body’s innate intelligence takes over and starts the healing process.
The exercise recommendations are simple and prevent exacerbations of fibromyalgia. That word “exacerbation” is a big word meaning setbacks that can last a while. You probably have already had times where you’re doing well with very few symptoms and then suddenly for a few days or a few weeks, you go through a difficult time with lots of symptoms. That’s an exacerbation. We want to prevent those exacerbations.
