Interval Training on the Beach

Interval training is a great form of exercise to get in shape.  By incorporating short burst of high intensity exercise with slow recovery periods at lower intensity you can improve your performance.  Many people have heard the term high intensity interval training (HIIT).  Maybe it’s time to give it a try!

By varying the intensity of your workouts you benefit both aerobic and anaerobic training at the same time.  It helps you improve speed, endurance and strength.

While the weather is nice during the summer, our top rated Freehold chiropractor shares how he takes advantage of the beach to do interval training:

Here are some great benefits of interval training:

  1. Takes Less Time:  It’s the most efficient form of cardio exercise because it delivers the benefits in a shorter amount of time than doing a regular cardio workout.  One study states doing just 3 HIIT workouts a week at 27 minutes provides the same results as 5 times per week hour long program of a regular cardio workout.  Another study shows Just 2 weeks of interval training provides aerobic improvement equal to 6 to 8 weeks of traditional exercise.
  2. Weight Loss:  Not only do you burn more calories, but in the 24 hours after doing interval training your body produces around 450% more Human Growth Hormone (HGH).  This increases your caloric burning, helps you lose more weight and slows down the aging process.
  3. Increases Happiness and decreases stress:  Intervals increases your endorphins which is the happy hormone.  This hormone is why many runners get a “runners high” and feel happy after exercise.
  4. Speed and Endurance improvements:  You burn lactic acid more efficiently during interval training.  This allows you to exercise longer and faster.
  5. Heart Health:  You maximize your cardiovascular benefits, decreasing your risk of heard disease and high blood pressure.
  6.  Get sick less:  Interval training reduces cholesterol, boosts your immune system and decreases inflammation.
  7. Less Boring:  I find that regular running can get boring.  By changing the intensity it changes up the routine.  Running on the beach ads other benefits by being on the sand.  Also the stress relieving benefits of hearing the waves, the sea gulls and fresh air of the ocean.

Try doing some interval running and let us know how it works for you!
