The journal Spine has a new report that claims patients with acute low back pain many times develop chronic symptoms. Acute low back pain can result from lifting something incorrectly while bending at the waist, picking up something as little as a pen or paper that fell on the floor, repetitive stress or straining ligaments or muscles in the back. Patients describe it as an episode of temporary pain that will resolve itself in under 90 days.
605 acute back pain patients were in a new study. 13% still had back pain after 6 months, 19% developed chronic symptoms after 2 years. Some of these patients had persistent pain while others experienced occasional episodes of pain.
In another study, 73% of patients reported re-occurrence of back pain and the majority of the patients stated the amount of pain worsened each time they got back pain.
So, what does all this mean to you? If you experience back pain, you should never ignore the pain as it’s a signal to you that something is wrong and it could be the beginning of a chronic problem if you do not take care of it right away.
