Due to Kickbacks, Risky Back Surgeries are on the Rise
Today I came upon a post by Dr. Graeme Gibson, Seattle Chiropractor that discusses an article he read on yahoo about orthopedic doctors receiving kickbacks for surgical procedures. I took interest to this because this is not surprising at all, as medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies have been known for years for this kickback disgrace.
Many medications and now surgeries that people are receiving are unnecessary and put patients at risk. Unfortunately most patients trust their doctors that what is being prescribed is in their best interest. But when one knows the statistics of back surgeries having less than a 50% success rate and a high risk or paralysis, why are these procedures being done before conservative care in many instances?
Most outcomes of surgery, even if get pain relief, the patient is then extremely limited in their daily activities. In most instances a surgery is considered a success if it provides pain relief, which most of the time lasts only 1 to 5 years, and then further surgical procedures are required.
Yes, medications and surgery are needed at times, but not at the rate they are being recommended. It’s always important that a patient gets a second opinion, and if necessary a 3rd opinion before taking drastic measures such as surgery. I highly recommend that anybody that has back pain, have one of those opinions be from a chiropractor as chiropractors are one of the few who are highly qualified for spinal problems. Many times a short treatment plan of chiropractic care can determine if a patient can improve and avoid surgery. Chiropractic is known to have around an 85% success rate with back pain, without the side effects of drugs or surgery.
I also have firsthand experience with back surgery, as my mother was told 15 years ago she needed surgery for spinal stenosis and a herniated disc and nothing else would help. Fortunately for her, I was in chiropractic college and I said to please try going to a chiropractor. I referred her to somebody I knew in her town… and we prevented her surgery for around 12 years before “needing” the surgery. Chiropractic helped her maintain her normal daily activities without restriction. Fortunately, when time came, I found her a great orthopedic surgeon who has an amazing reputation.
In my 13 years in practice, I have helped patients in Freehold, Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, and Morganville, NJ avoid unnecessary surgeries that orthopedic doctors said were the only answer. So before opting for surgery, give us a call to see if we can help you.

Freehold Chiropractor says Most Doctors Miss the Cause of Your Sciatica
Being a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I see patients from most of Monmouth County and other parts of the state that suffer with sciatica. After treatments with medications, rest, and physical therapy the problem persists because these treatments do not get to the cause of the sciatica the majority of the time.
Dr. Tyler Baker, Omaha Chiropractor, wrote a great blog about what sciatica pain is and some possible treatment options. If you have pain that shoots down your leg, experience numbness or tingling in your leg or foot, have weakness in your legs or even soreness and pain by your butt, you could be experiencing sciatica. I highly recommend Dr. Baker’s Omaha Chiropractic Blog and his post: Sciatica Pain and Treatment
Medication at best will just cover up the pain of sciatica, but it will not correct it. Taking medication is like if you went to the dentist for a toothache or painful cavity and the doctor said for you to take some pain medication and anti-inflammatories but not treat the cavity. You know that the cavity would continue to decay and get worse, eventually needing drastic procedures to fix what could’ve been prevented in the first place. Yet, this is the way most doctors treat patients and you follow their lead.
Physical therapy has a slightly higher success in treating the sciatica as many times the PT will first do some therapies like electric stimulation or ultrasound to ease the pain and decrease the swelling, then do some stretching to loosen the muscles and probably finish with some strengthening exercises to try to stabilize the area. Short term this gives relief bu this in long term can cause problems as the underlying cause is still not being corrected and doing these exercises will just splint the area in the imbalanced position. The problem will further degenerate years down the road.
Chiropractors look for the cause of the problem. Many look for misalignments called subluxations, where the vertebra move out of place, putting pressure on the nerve, therefor causing the symptoms of pain, numbness and tingling, and leg weakness. These bones moving out of place can cause a herniated disc, swelling and degeneration in the long run. By performing chiropractic adjustments, chiropractors reposition the bones of the spine to remove the pressure on the nerve, thereby getting to the cause of the problem.
In our office at Hometown Family Wellness Center, we take a multi-pronged approach to not only find the cause, but many times the surrounding muscles of the spine and legs are out of balance and will pull the bones back out of place. While adjusting the spine, we also perform therapeutic activities to those supporting soft tissues: hamstrings, quadriceps and piriformis muscles in the legs, as well as the paravertebral muscles of the spine. This overall approach, gets the optimal results, as our goal is to get you out of pain and enjoying your normal activities.
Would you like your health professional to find the cause of your back pain and sciatica so you can enjoy your normal daily activities and time with friends and family? Would you like to finally live without the pain and prevent future problems?
If you answer yes to these questions, live in Freehold or the surrounding towns of Marlboro, Manalapan, Englishtown, Morganville, Colts Neck, Howell, Millstone or Jackson, NJ, contact Hometown Family Wellness Center to get on the road to recovery as soon as possible.

Car Accident in Freehold? Why Chiropractic Care is the Best Option!
Car accidents happen every day and most people have been in one during their lifetime. As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I see patients from the area, including Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Millstone, Morganville and Jackson, New Jersey in Monmouth County.
While reading some articles online today, I came upon Denver Chiropractor, Dr. Trent Artichoker’s blog post on auto accidents. It reminded me how important it is to educate the community the importance of getting their spines checked after an accident, no matter how serious one things their accident is or is not. Many times people walk away from an accident not feeling any pain, but even a 5 mile per hour little fender bender results in whiplash injuries, also called cervical acceleration deceleration syndrome. It’s important to get checked to prevent future problems, not only with the body, but trying to get coverage by the auto insurance. It’s possible that the symptoms from this type of injury don’t show for days, weeks, months or even years down the road.
I have patients that come into my office with neck pain, headaches, lower back pain, sciatica, numbness and tingling down the arms, or mid back pain not knowing where it came from, but upon proper questioning usually find out the patient had a car accident years before that they thought was harmless. After an exam, it can usually be traced back to the car accident. The difficult part is, if the problem has been laying without symptoms for months or years, scar tissue builds up and is more difficult to correct.
So, whether you do or do not have pain after an accident. It is so important to get examined by a qualified health professional. Many seek the help of a medical doctor, but in most cases they will just treat the symptoms with pain medication, ice and rest. This makes the problem more chronic in the long run as the underlying cause of the pain is not corrected. Dr. Artichoker mentions in his Denver Chiropractic blog there are many options in treatment of an auto accident, but I totally agree that chiropractors are are at the top of the list to get examined and treated by as we are one of the only health professionals trained to examine the joints, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, discs and other soft tissues and the in treatment in these musculoskeletal conditions.
Documentation of these findings and treatment are so important, especially for insurance needs and in case attorneys and a court case is in the future.
Remember.. no accident is too small for problems to occur. Call our office if you have been in a motor vehicle accident to make sure no underlying problems are present and to get treatment quickly to expedite recovery.
